Overview
Short URL Online builds a URL shortener right into SharePoint Online. Select a document, click a button, and share a compact link instead of a long, hard-to-read address. Short links are easier to send in chat and email, look tidy on slides and printed materials, and can be changed at any time — without breaking anything for the people who already have them.
The extension integrates with the document library command bar and includes a management web part for working with all your links in one place. Link data is stored securely in a Microsoft Azure database; no personal data is retained — only a unique user identifier.
One-Click URL Shortener
Short URL Online makes it possible to create a new shortened URL with a single click. Select the document in the SharePoint document library for which you need a short link and choose the Short URL button on the command bar — a shortened URL is generated automatically and is ready to share.
Customizable URL
You can change the short URL as well as the domain for existing shortened links — turning an automatically generated code into a meaningful, memorable address. This feature is available both in the document library and in the Short URL web part.
Manage All Your Links in One Place
The Short URL Management web part gives you a single view of your shortened links. Give each link a title so it is easy to recognize later, edit the short address or its target, and keep your link collection tidy as content moves around.
For advanced scenarios, a single short link can point to different targets depending on the visitor's device — Windows, macOS, iPhone, or Android — so everyone lands on the version of the content that suits their platform.
Short Links Without Limitations
Short URL Online handles real-world SharePoint addresses gracefully: special characters such as ?, #, %, and & are fully supported, and you can even use emoji in a short link to make it stand out. There is nothing to install on user devices and no training required — if your team can use a document library, they can use Short URL Online.

How do I create a short link in SharePoint Online?
Select a document in a library and click Short URL in the command bar — the link is created in one click. For any other content (pages, folders, external sites) use the Short URL Management web part: enter the origin URL, choose a domain and type the short path; a title is optional. How is Short URL Online deployed?
The package contains two files: vitextra.short-url-online.sppkg (the command bar extension) and vitextra.short-url-online.webparts.sppkg (the management web part). Both are uploaded to the tenant App Catalog. The web part can be made available to all sites at deployment, while the command bar extension must be added to each site (New → App → Vitextra Short URL); activation takes a couple of minutes per site. Can I change an existing short link?
Yes. Both the short path and the domain of an existing link can be edited at any time — from the document library or in the Short URL Management web part — without breaking the association with the original content. Short links support emoji and special characters such as ?, #, % and &.
Can a short link open different targets on different devices?
Yes. In the Short URL Management web part you can set platform-specific targets — separate destinations for Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android — so the same short link opens, for example, a web page on desktop and a mobile app page on a phone.
Where is the link data stored?
Short link definitions are stored in a Microsoft Azure database operated by Vitextra; the unique ID of the user who created or modified a link is saved for tracking. Creating a link requires edit permission on the SharePoint site. The product is available for SharePoint Online only; for SharePoint Server use the on-premises Short URL product.

- Search in Short URL Management: A new search box above the list finds short URLs by title or link. Results update as you type.
- Sorting: Click the “Title” or “Created” column header to sort the list; click again to reverse the order.
- Copy from the list: Each row now has a copy button next to the short URL, so you no longer need to open the link form to copy it.
- Bulk delete: Select several short URLs in the list and delete them in one step, after a single confirmation.
🐞 Fixed Bugs
- The user was not passed to the service when a short URL was created from a document library, so the link was created without its author
- The “Copied” message stayed on screen and never disappeared
- The domain drop-down in the Short URL web part always showed “sppro.org”, and the shortened link built after changing the domain pointed to a wrong address
- The document library dialog showed a spinner forever when the short URL could not be created; it now shows the error
- The last page of the list showed a wrong range of records, and the “last page” button did not work
- The list reloaded every time the page theme changed
- The “Created by” column could show the author of another row after the web part was added to a page twice
- Any error while saving a short URL was reported as “URL already exists”; other errors are now shown with their own message
- Errors while loading the list, the license or user names were silently ignored
